Best Dog Clippers for Thick Coats

#1. Andis Ultraedge Super 2-Speed Detachable Blade Clipper

This is a professional heavy duty dog clipper, which is suitable for any coat type or dog breed. One of my favorite characteristics of this product is its quietness. This is great for those who have dogs that are restless around noise.

The blade is detachable, which is very cool. This makes it easier to change or clean. It also has a 2-speed function, so you can have that professional cut you desire for your dog.

As for maneuverability, this clipper comes with a 14” heavy-duty cord. So you can move around your dog’s body with ease.

While you work your way through his fur keep in mind that this clipper shaves at 3,400 strokes per minute on low setting and 4,400 strokes per minute on high setting. Quite impressive!

We all love products that can last long, lucky you! This dog clipper has shatterproof housing. This means you’ll be spared of damages if you accidentally drop it.

Last but not least, it is not so heavy, weighing just 1 pound. You won’t tire out when giving your dog his much-needed trim.

Pros

  • Shatterproof protective Housing
  • Whisper quiet sound when in use
  • 2-speed function
  • Made to shave any coat type

Cons

  • Gets hot when use for extended period

#2. Wahl Professional Pet Thick Coat Clipper

This is another solid and amazing 2-speed clipper and it’s just the right tool for thick-coated breeds. It is excellent if you want to give your dog a soft trim, or a total shave down without tugging.

When in use, this dog clipper is very quiet, it also produces very little vibration that could cause fatigue around the wrist You may not even know it’s on! Your dog is going to feel relaxed around it when clipping him and I’m sure he’d love that.

The package includes Wahl’s 7F Ultimate Competition Series blade, which gives you an optimal clipping performance. Also included in the package are – one corded clipper, blade oil, cleaning brush, and an instruction manual.

At 12.9 ounces, it’s not too heavy so you can maneuver easily.

The best part?

The manufacturer places a 2-year warranty on this product so you can be rest assured you’re buying a quality dog clipper for thick coats.

Pros

  • Comfort and ease of use
  • Comes with a 2-year warranty
  • 2-speed function
  • Almost noiseless and produces low vibration

Cons

  • Comes with one size blade

#3. Oster A5 Turbo 2-Speed Professional Clipper

This dog clipper is suitable for general purpose grooming. It simply gets the job done!

It’s a 2-speed clipper, which shaves at 3000 strokes per minute on low setting, and 4000 strokes per minute on high setting.

It is designed with a detachable size 10 Cyogen-X blade, that gives your dog a nice, smooth trim. My favorite feature of this clipper is that it’s almost unbreakable, thanks to its rugged housing. It will last you for many years!

Before I forget, this clipper is compatible with all Oster A5 detachable blades so you have many options to choose from.

It weighs 1.97 pounds, a bit heavier than the brand I mentioned above, all the same, it is a great and effective dog clipper. I am sure you would love it!

Pros

  • 2-speed setting for varied hair length clipping
  • Compatible with all Oster A5 detachable blades
  • Has a very hard housing which is very hard to break
  • Easy to use for first-time groomers

Cons

  • •Gets hot hence might need a break between sessions

#4. Wahl Professional Animal ARCO Cordless Clipper

Personally, this is my favorite of them all, and that’s why I use it. I consider this as one of the best dog clippers for thick double coats money can buy.

It has an ergonomic design that lets it fit nicely in your hand. It is also very light, weighing just 7.9 ounces, so there will be no strain on your wrist or shoulder. Talk about shaving with ease!

I have to mention that this is a single-speed dog clipper, but it’s totally worth it! It shaves at 5,500 strokes per minute, meaning it’s super-fast, in fact, it’s one of the fastest dog clippers you will find.

It’s a delight for professional groomers

You do not need a power outlet to operate this clipper. It is cordless and rechargeable. It takes about 75 minutes to reach a full charge. It also has a run time of about 80 minutes, amazing right?

Being cordless, you can reach and clip some tricky spots like spaces between the paws, hairs on the faces and ears.

The great thing about using a cordless dog clipper is that you can shave your dog just about anywhere, even when you’re camping in the woods!

Lastly, it comes with a one-year warranty from the manufacturer. I strongly recommend!

Pros

  • It is a super-fast dog clipper
  • It is very lightweight
  • Perfect for your dog’s feet and facial finishing
  • It is cordless

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with a solid protective case

#5. Andis Pro-Clip AGC2 2-Speed Detachable Blade Clipper

This is another great dog clipper for thick coats I came across in my search. Does your dog love silence? If the answer is yes, then he’ll love being shaved with this clipper as it is almost noiseless!

It’s made to glide through thick coats and matted furs. It doesn’t matter what breed you own, this product will get the job done!

It is easy to clean, thanks to its detachable blade. It is also very rugged, its housing is shatterproof so be rest assured this dog clipper will last you a very long time.

It is designed with a 2-speed functionality. It shaves at 2,700 strokes per minute on low setting, and 3,400 strokes per minute on high setting. Pretty decent if you ask me.

It has a 14” cord, which can allow you to maneuver your way around your dog’s body as you shave. Maneuverability would have been better if it were lighter though. It weighs 2 pounds, and that’s heavier than most good brands of dog clippers.

All in all, it is a great product and I suggest you give it a try!

Pros

  • Has a shatterproof housing
  • The blade is detachable so it is easy to clean and replace
  • It runs quietly
  • The 14” cord allows you to maneuver around your dog’s body with ease

Cons

  • It weighs 2 pounds, which is surprising since it’s a small clipper.

#6. Andis Easy-Clip Pro-Animal 7-Piece Detachable Blade Clipper Kit

This is a great product that’s perfect for home use. If you don’t want to visit a grooming shop, I’ll recommend this product. It’s also more affordable than most professional clippers.

Because of the nature of which it’s made for, it might heat up faster (after continued use) than professional ones but that doesn’t mean it won’t get the job done

It carries a powerful rotary motor clipper that makes it glide easily through thick coat and matted fur without tugging and it’s suitable for all dog breeds and furs.

It’s a quiet tool with little to no vibrations and it’s lightweight – this may be an underrated feature if you’re not a professional groomer.

Attached to it is a 12” heavy-duty cord. It is not as long as the cords of other brands but it still allows you to maneuver around your dog’s body as you shave.

The kit includes a durable hand storage case and 4 attachment comb sizes. Cool right?

This product offers great value for money and you’ll enjoy using it.

Pros

  • Operates quietly
  • Effectively shaves all dog breeds with thick coats
  • Has break-resistant housing
  • Kit comes with 4 attachment comb sizes

Cons

  • Not guaranteed to last for years

#7. Oster Clipmaster Grooming Clipping Machine

Now, this is one dog clipper you will enjoy using. It’s a powerhouse perfect for the thickest coats when used with the correct head. And it won’t jam up with your dog’s hair.

The blade cuts through any type of dog hair with ease, and it is just what you need to give your dog a full body trim.

It is also built to last long, thanks to its hard body and titanium blades.

It is almost maintenance-free, as the blades can stay oiled for up to 100 hours of use!

Impressive, isn’t it?

I’ve got just one issue with this dog clipper – it weighs 7.88 pounds. Understandably so, since it was specifically designed to give big dogs with thick furs a full body trim. It will be hard to find a dog clipper in this range that would be lighter.

Pros

  • Trims any dog hair type with ease. It is perfect for big dogs
  • Gets the job done faster
  • Blade stays oiled for up to 100 hours so it doesn’t require frequent oiling
  • It will last a very long time

Cons

  • It’s pretty heavy

#8. Pet Union Professional Dog Grooming Kit

The lifetime replacement guarantee placed on this dog clipper is a testament to how much of a quality product this is. It is a low-noise clipper that won’t bother your dog with any annoying buzz sound. If you have an anxious dog, then this is an excellent choice!

It is also cordless, and rechargeable. So you can take it anywhere and shave your dog without the need for a power outlet.

This product is designed with precision-cut titanium blades that cut your dog’s fur smoothly, it does this without pulling on your dog’s hair along the way. It also comes with multiple blades and combs which makes it ideal for several fur types.

This clipper’s ergonomic design makes it comfortable to hold. It weighs just 1.45 pounds so you’ll have no problems shaving with this clipper. The comfort-fit design makes it easy for you to shave those hard-to-reach areas on your dog’s body so you won’t miss a spot.

Another great feature of this dog clipper is that it doesn’t get hot when in use, so you don’t have to stop every 15 minutes to see if it’s burning your dog’s skin.

With all the above-listed qualities and its low price, this clipper definitely ranks among the best dog clipper for thick coats available in the market!

Pros

  • It is very affordable
  • Comes with multiple blades and combs
  • It is lightweight
  • It doesn’t heat up when in use
  • Comes with a lifetime replacement guarantee

Cons

  • Yet to find a fault with this dog clipper

#9. Hansprou Professional Dog Clipper

This is a heavy-duty dog clipper running on a 12V high-speed strong power motor. This machine eats any coats like butter either thick or matted – thanks to its 12V motor as compared to several clippers on lower voltage.

It gets the job done quicker than you can imagine and its ease of use is second to none. It will be an awesome choice for first-time groomers.

Despite more power, it doesn’t emit noise that could scare or irritate a nervous dog. And it doesn’t get hot while in use.

Another feature that I like is it comes with a really long cord of 2.5 meters that allows you to move freely all over your dog’s body with no hassles whatsoever

If you desire to clip at different lengths of hair, this clipper makes it easier with the 4 guard combs bundled with it and 5 adjustable shift levels.

Its blades are a combination of high-quality Titanium Alloy and Ceramic for better clipping and durability. They can be detached easily as well whenever you want to have them cleaned or changed

The metal handle is solid and ensures you have a firm grip on the clipper so there’s no chance of it slipping off.

The manufacturers placed a 2-year quality assurance on this clipper, so it’s a good buy any day.

Pros

  • It’s a powerful machine
  • The clipper head has 5 levels of adjustability
  • Produces little noise and vibration
  • It has an anti-skid handle
  • It is lightweight.

Cons

  • Much care need as the blades are really sharp

10. AIBORS Pet Clipper Grooming Kit

This is a product that’s so similar to Hansprou Dog Shaver Clippers in terms of features and specs.

Powered by a 12V hi-speed and strong motor, it will glide through your dog coats easily. Its power drive cutting technology cuts with 3 times more efficiency and power.

It has the traditional steel blades replaced by a combination of high-quality Titanium alloy and ceramic blades that perform better and do not overheat over extended use.

It’s 35-tooth detachable titanium blade that cuts through thick fur with ease. A great feature of this clipper is that the blades do not snag up your dog’s hair.

Handling this clipper is pretty easy, it weighs just 1.74 pounds so trimming will be a breeze.

The package comes with one grooming scissors, one steel comb, 4 guard combs, one cleaning brush, and one user manual. Everything you need!

It comes with a 12-month warranty by the way.

Pros

  • It cuts with 3 times more power t

Best Dog Clipper Buying Guide: Things to Consider Before Buying

Giving your thick-coated dog a much-needed trim is important. It makes your dog look good and attractive, especially when you want to show him off to your friends or take him out on walks. You wouldn’t want him looking shabby, would you?

You could explore other options of the best clippers for thick coats if the above mentioned do not suit your tastes or needs. However, it would be wise to take some factors into consideration before you buy.

These factors are –

1. Choose a kit designed for your dog’s breed or the closest to it

As I mentioned earlier in this article, there are so many dog breeds in the world. In fact, there are more dog breeds than there are manufacturers of dog clippers. For this reason, you should consider buying a dog clipper that best suits your dog’s breed, or go for one closest to it.

There are dog clippers for German Shepherds, and there are for poodles. You know your dog’s breed, so the choice should be made by you.

2. Buy a dog clipper that makes little noise

It’s hard enough keeping your dog still for the cut, it would be harder if your dog clipper makes a lot of noise. Some dogs are anxious and won’t be able to stand it.

Be advised to buy a clipper that makes very minimal noise. I recommend one that produces not more than 50 decibels.

3. Consider the weight

Trimming your dog’s fur is quite a job since you have a lot of furs to deal with. It would become unpleasant if you’re using a heavy dog clipper.

A heavy clipper will put strains on your wrist and will quickly tire you out.

Buy one that doesn’t weigh too much. Something between 1.5 pounds to 3 pounds is ideal.

4. The grip

You’d want something that’s easy to hold on to, one that won’t slip off.

A dog clipper with a skid-resistant handle is your best bet!

5. Consider the battery life

This is for those who prefer to use battery-operated dog clippers. You don’t want your battery being exhausted in the middle of a cut, neither do you want to charge it all the time.

6. Length of the cord

If you prefer the plug-in clippers, then go for one that has a decent length. A 14” long cord is suitable. It gives you enough room to maneuver around your dog’s body.

Trust me, a short cord would be frustrating. I’ve been there

7. Heat production

It is normal for clippers to produce heat, but there are clippers (like some of the ones I recommended above) that produce very little heat. Those are the ones you should go for!

Trust me, a short cord would be frustrating. I’ve been there

Best Dog Clippers for Thick Coats FAQs

I understand that you may be new to the idea of grooming your dog, hence you would have some questions.

Most common questions as far as dog grooming is concerned include:

Can I Groom My Dog With Human Clippers?

The answer is No! Human clippers are not designed to trim dog hair. If you use them on your dog, it will lead to hair pulling and eventual injuries. These injuries would leave your dog vulnerable to infections.
Dogs have different skin from humans so you have to use a special kind of clipper on them. Dog clippers are more powerful, sharper and the blades have more teeth than human clippers.

Do All Dog Clippers Have The Same Blade Size?

No, dog clippers come in different sizes: 3,4,5,7,9,10,15,30,40,50.
There are other sizes but these are the most common. The higher the blade number, the shorter your dog’s hair will be after the trim.

Why Are Silent Clippers Recommended?

Silent clippers are considered the best for obvious reasons – they are silent. Silent clippers are perfect for stressed or anxious dogs, who would be disturbed by clipper noise.
There are so many great models of silent dog clippers, some of which I mentioned in my review. Feel free to go through them again.

Can I Sharpen My Dog Clipper?

Yes, you can. You will need a few items to do this. These include –
Screwdriver
Spray bottle with water
A piece of cloth
One 3,000 – 4,000 coarse grit stone
One fine 8,000 grit stone
Clipper oil
Clipper cleaning solution
Now follow these steps to sharpen your dog clipper.
Remove the blade
Remove all dog hair from the blade
Use the cleaning solution to clean the blade
Soak the 2 stones in water for 10-15 minutes
Place the edge of the blade against the 3,000-4,000 grit stone and slide it from one end to the other about 20 times
Remove the metal residue from the blade then repeat the process on the 8,000 grit stone
Apply clipper oil to your blades then test it
You can do this right at home!

What Clipper Blades Are Good For Dog Grooming?

Well, all clipper blades are suitable for dog grooming, that was what they were made for in the first place. It really depends on how you want your dog to look after the trim.
For basic trimming of the body and between the paws, a size 10 blade is best suited.
For trimming around the ears and face, a size 40 is great.
If your dog has very short hair, a size 30-50 blade will do just fine.
Your choice of blades would also depend on the breed of your dog.

Which Is The Best Dog Clipper For Thick Coats?

There are so many great brands and models of dog clippers for thick coatsonce again it all depends on your dog’s breed.

I personally recommend Wahl Professional Animal ARCO Cordless Clipper Kit. It is lightweight, cordless, and the battery lasts for as long as 80 minutes. It also has a shaving speed of 5,500 strokes per second.

Another reason I recommend this dog clipper is that it’s suitable for many dog breeds, large and small.

Feel free to explore other brands though.

Can I Use Manual Dog Clippers?

Most definitely you can. Manual clippers are noiseless and produce almost zero vibration. You also don’t need a power source or batteries to use a manual dog clipper.

However, keep in mind that manual dog clippers will get the job done slower. Also, you may not be able to properly trim fur in those hard-to-reach areas of your dog’s body.

Electronic dog clippers remain the most effective option.

Wrap Up

Your dog’s looks are a reflection of you, the parent. For this reason, you should keep your dog looking great at all times.

Giving them a trim at the required time is your responsibility. It keeps them handsome and healthy.

If you’re new to dog grooming, then I hope this article has provided the information you need. If you’ve been grooming your dog in the past, but with dog clippers that aren’t just good enough, then consider some of the best brands of dog clippers I recommended in this article.

Remember to first consider some important factors before you buy a dog clipper. Factors such as weight, battery life, durability, maneuverability and noise production top the list.
